Abstract

N. betuloides (Fagaceae) is an economically important tree species from Fuegian forest (Argentina). The present work was carried out aiming to study the effects of gibberellic acid and potassium nitrate on the release of dormacy, and the presence of differences in germination of 2-winged and 3-winged. 3-winged seeds are significantly bigger than 2-winged but this factor did not affect neither rate germination nor germinative energy. Immersion time and gibberellic acid concentration affect significantly the rate of germination and germinative energy. The potassium nitrate did not produce the same response. Unlike other Nothofagus species, it is easy to release N. betuloides seeds from dormancy.
