Abstract

In Mexico, there are approximately 200 species of Quercus. In the State of Nuevo Leon, there are 51 species of Quercus. From these Quercus affinis, Q. rysophylla, Q. polymorpha and Q. prinopsis represent the species of higher abundance and better stem. The specific gravity and the radial, tangential and volumetric shrinkage of the wood of these species were measured Q. affinis obtained the smaller specific gravity and Q. prinopsis the largest. Q. prinopsis got the largest volumetric shrinkage and dimensional stability. Q. affinis and Q. rysophylla, can be used for beam, bolster, columns, frames, bridges, shafts, etc. Q. polymorpha and Q. prinopsis can be used for joinery, doors, windows, handles for tools, pencils, boxes, stave, toys, craftsmanship, etc. It is recommended to realize commercial plantations with Quercus affinis, Q. rysophylla, Q. polymorpha and Q. prinopsis.
