Abstract

This paper summarize the information available for the characterization of forest genetic resources in Spain, based on the Data Bank of the Nature (Ministry of Environment). The GIS oriented data comprise databases for the description of the environment (climate, soil, ecological classification of Spain), the National Catalogue of Base Material (including seed sources, selected stands and provenance regions of the main forest species), the main threats to forest genetic conservation (forest fires, pest and diseases, etc.) and the description of the different categories of protected areas in Spain. This information can be used to describe the genetic resources of tree forest species, and to implement national strategies of forest resources conservation.
