Specific gravity and volumetric shrinkage variability in Prosopis wood
Abstract
Wood specific gravity and volumetric contraction were examined in Prosopis flexuosa and Prosopis nigra trees from western areas of Province of Cordoba (Argentinian dry Chaco). The variation of these properties were analized among species, among trees within a species, and within the tree (at different heights). Prosopis flexuosa originated from seed and coppice were also examined. There were significant statistical differences (α=0.10) between the basal and central portion of the stem. The highest variation was observed among trees within a species. There were not significant statistical differences between species (Pr. flexuosa and Pr. nigra) and between differents origin (seed and coppice) in Prosopis flexuosa. These Prosopis species have a high specific wood gravity and good dimensional stability.
